Temitope Adediran moved from building a career in real estate to building software solutions for global tech teams. Her venture into the tech scene was inspired by a facebook post of two teenage boys who built a web browser without a formal tech education. She started out learning after work hours till about 2am daily till she finally transitioned into full-time software development at Andela. Today, she lends her voice in women participation in tech and also mentor young ladies interested in building a career in tech.

What experiences led you to technology and how did you develop the skills to compete in the industry?
I was working at a Real Estate Firm when I started managing the web content of the company and got curious whenever I saw the backend code. A colleague who knew I liked tech stuff heard about an upcoming Andela bootcamp and thought I should apply. I was a little hesitant because I didn’t know what software development was about but I was inspired to apply when I read about two kids who had learnt to code with the use of online resources.
I started learning with www.codecademy.com, applied into Andela and got mentors along the way who helped me a great deal. I didn’t get into Andela until the third trial but each phase was a learning process which helped steer me in the direction of my new found passion.
How has your background helped/differentiated you in the tech industry?
Having worked in a business development/sales role, the people skills I acquired has put me in the class of extroverted developers that actively promote and encourage women participation in the tech ecosystem.
What advice would you give to women considering a career in technology? What do you wish you had known?
Software development is a lifelong learning process. It requires GRIT and PASSION as do any other job. You can do it if you truly put your heart into it.
Make good use of online resources. Google is your friend, you’ll be amazed at the amount of information you’ll find if you just google that word.
Find people who have gone ahead of you and learn from them. They’ll be your anchor during those times of self doubt on your learning journey.
